How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session

When to Book Your Newborn Session

For the dreamiest, sleepiest newborn photos, we recommend scheduling your session within the first 7–14 days after birth. During this time, babies are still curled up and more likely to snooze through poses and swaddles. We suggest booking your due date while you’re still pregnant — we’ll tentatively block off time around your expected delivery and adjust the session once baby arrives.

What to Expect During Your Session

Newborn sessions with Jaclyn Specia Photography typically last 2–3 hours, giving us plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and posing without feeling rushed. We create a calm, cozy environment in our studio (or your home, if you choose a lifestyle session), where baby leads the pace and safety is always the top priority.

You can expect:

  • A warm and quiet space designed for comfort
  • Soft wraps, headbands, bonnets, and props provided
  • Time for family and sibling shots, if desired
  • A gentle, baby-led approach to posing

What to Bring to Your Newborn Session

To help things go smoothly, here’s a quick checklist of what to bring:

  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • A pacifier (even if baby doesn’t regularly use one — it can be soothing)
  • Bottles or nursing supplies
  • A blanket or special heirloom item you’d like photographed
  • Snacks and water are provided, but feel free to bring your own

If siblings are joining, we recommend dressing them first, capturing their photos at the beginning, and then having a partner or family member take them home or on a walk.

What to Wear

For parents and siblings, simple, neutral-toned clothing photographs best. Think whites, creams, soft grays, and muted earth tones. Avoid logos, bold patterns, or bright colors that might distract from your baby’s sweet features.

Comfort is key, especially for moms who are still healing. Choose pieces that help you feel both beautiful and relaxed — and we’re happy to offer wardrobe tips if you need them!

How to Prepare Baby

A few small steps can help make your session extra smooth:

  • Keep baby awake for about 30–60 minutes before the session
  • Feed baby just before leaving (or as soon as you arrive)
  • Dress baby in a loose-fitting sleeper or onesie that’s easy to remove
  • Skip anything tight around wrists, ankles, or waist that could leave marks

We’ll handle the rest — wrapping, soothing, posing, and creating a calm environment so you can just soak in the moment.

Trust the Process

Every baby is different. Some sleep soundly through the entire session, others need a little more time and snuggles. That’s perfectly okay. At Jaclyn Specia Photography, we take a gentle, flexible approach so your baby is always comfortable — and the images we create reflect their sweet, one-of-a-kind personality.
